Talk To Your Daughter Before the Beauty Industry Does!

When I have talked about our distorted view on beauty in previous posts, if you’re not yet convinced take a look at this video by Dove Self-Esteem Fund. More specifically, it’s our objectification of women that is an issue, or objectification in general. An issue that more than often is classified as feministic mumbo-jumbo by conservative people. However, when it comes to fighting female stereotype, males of this earth are not the enemy.

Sure a good share of them like to objectify women to their physical shapes and figure, but then again so is the animal kingdom built. We are very much driven by animal instincts and though it is not an excuse for treating women or men in an inconsiderate way, it definitely helps to explain a certain behavior.

No, the enemy is indeed the beauty industry, men and women who are selling products through marketing campaigns with a clear focus: outer beauty, sex and a very distorted view on beauty.

I hence advice every parent to talk to your children before the beauty industry does. Physical attraction, sex and outer beauty are all wonderful things and essential parts of what it is to live. However, it does not belong in ads and campaigns nor does it belong convincing our children that being beautiful is having the perfect body.

The Eyes – A Window to Our Soul!

Since this site is as much about inner beauty as outer we thought we would combine the two in a post about one of the human senses that can help us to appreciate both. The eyes is perhaps the one part of our body that applies to both inner and outer beauty. Not only to they carry a color and mysterious pattern of the iris but are also said to be the window through which our soul, and inner beauty, can be truly felt.

When a common belief is that cosmetics and make-up are shallow tools to lay attention only on outer beauty and vanity, we like to claim otherwise. To enhance the eyes is like opening the window, rip off the curtains and let everyone see how beautiful you are. Eye-liner is thus our choice of make-up. And perhaps some lipstick to caress the words, thoughts and ideas that are comming out of your mouth. So, for the believers of make-up to only be for Paris Hiltons and Super Models, eye-liner and lipstick can be considered a tool rather to bring out the inner beauty in you than hide behind a mask.

Our Western Celebrity Obsession!

A picture of a celebrity is worth thousands of dollars in today’s paparazzi industry. Britney Spears in a crazy posture, Kate Moss’s apparent cellulitis in a tiny bikini, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s aging biceps. The list is long of captures that have sent magazine sales through the roof. And there is no doubt that this obsession we in the west have created around celebrities is affecting our perception of beauty. The celebrity magazines are on a witch-hunt trying to find the worst looking, less beautiful celebrity in the baddest physical shape and it makes me sick how we can objectify actual human beings to the extent of publishing personal pictures of how a certain person looks. Even if they are celebrities.

How come we are so obsessed in judging and gasping about a perfect stranger’s physical condition? Why aren’t people with known actor, music and entertainment achievements celebrated for their careers rather than how they look? What makes celebrities so inhuman that we treat them like they lack any kind of emtions?

For this post I have no answer and I would love to hear some of your opinions about our western celebrity culture!

Life is short and before you can start living and enjoy the many pleasures in life you have to be able to look in the mirror and feel proud of your own reflection. I recently started this journey and this blog will be my journal in which I will post thoughts, reflections and doubts. See you around!
